to a re-election with the help of women and minority voters, the nation's first black president appears to be stacking his second term cabinet with white men. the president's choice for treasury secretary is expected to be jack lee. that's after nominating john kerry for state, chuck hagel for defense and john brennan for cia chief. obviously as you can see, they are all white men. with hillary clinton exiting the state department and lisa jackson stepping down as head of the epa, the obama administration's at a net loss when it comes to women and minorities in the cabinet. "outfront" tonight, roland martin, rosa brooks, and reihan salam. rosa, let me start with you. this is a president who campaigned aggressively on women's reproductive rights and equal pay for equal work. it was a big part of his campaign. he won the women's vote by double digits over mitt romney. should the president be asking for something that he mocked, i.e., binders of women? >> i'm tempted to send him a few binders. i know a lot of fantastic women. i think this isn't an issue of affirmative action here.

christine romans. a year marked with obsession of budgets and elections, 2013 is shaping up a little different. our leaders may actually do something to reign in gun violence. we don't know if this momentum will last, if congress will actually act. there's been a lot of talk of an executive order. this time at least feels different. this week, vice president biden held a series of task force meetings with various stakeholders in the gun debate, delivering a set of recommendations to the president based on that input as soon as tuesday. >> there's got to be some common ground here to not solve every problem, but diminish the probability that what we've seen in these mass shootings would occur and diminish the probability that children are at risk in their schools. >> these meetings weren't just some photo-op. even the nra attended. after the meetings, it trashed the agenda as an attack on the second amendment. walmart, probably the biggest gun seller, was shamed, i guess, into showing up. retailer originally said executives couldn't attend. they had scheduling difficult s difficulties

2012 laerksz the republican party is now searching for a way to recover and beyond the election loss, there's house speaker john boehner, he's had his own problems lose ageffort to get support from his colleagues for a last ditch fiscal cliff measure. another story the tea party wing in the gop still has influence. and that sometimes causes major divisions. so is it time for the party to change? does it need to become a big tent? rich galen joins us from washington, a republican strategist. rich, i guess you could say the gop has its own bad case of the flu. what's the cure here? >> part of it is is just as with the flu for most people, wait it out. take plenty of water, go to bed and wait till you feel better. that's part of what's going to have to happen here. these things in washington tend to be cyclical. in terms of what the republicans in the house are going through, it's useful to remember, when i first came back to washington in 1996, i talked to a friend. i was working for newt gingrich. i was talking to a friend who worked for tip o'neill. i said how did tip spend his day?

normally with our lives, getting ready for a national election, and the holidays to follow. then sandy hit. sandy was worst storm to strike new jersey in our history. 346,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. nearly 7 million people and over 1,000 schools were without power. 116,000 new jerseyians were evacuated or displaced from their homes. 41,000 families are still displaced from their homes today. sandy may have damaged our homes and our infrastructure, but it did not destroy our spirit. the people of new jersey have come together as never before, across party lines, across ideological lines, across ages, and races, and backgrounds, from all parts of our state, even from out of state, everyone has come together. so today, let me start this address with a set of thanks from me on behalf of the people of this great state. first, i want to thank the brave first responders, the national guard, and emergency management experts from around this state who prepared us for this storm, and kept us safe in its aftermath.
